Fort Brown, Brownsville, Texas

Fort Brown, Brownsville, Texas Mason City RV Park, TX

A memorial plaque to Herbert L. Stokley, Brownsville civic leader who was instrumental in the development of the civic center project, which includes the Fort Brown memorial, which he wrote.

A distant view of the Fort Brown Memorial written by Mr. Stokley and located at the University of Texas Brownsville/Texas Southernmost College.

Walking closer, a readable view of the Fort Brown Memorial. [Click 1 or 2 times to enlarge; use Alt + Left Arrow to return here.]
Army General Zachary Taylor renamed Fort Taylor to honor Major Jacob Brown, the commander of the fort who lost his life when it was taken by Mexican forces. "Old Rough and Ready" fought in the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War (1832), and the Second Seminole War (1837). Outnumbered 4-1, Gen. Taylor defeated Santa Ana at Buena Vista in 1847 and went on to become the 12th President of the U.S.

The mural at the other side of the breezeway from the Ft. Brown Memorial, which was crafted by Roy Keister; this mural was done by someone with an apparent surname of Binde.

The Jacob Brown Auditorium is apparently used by both the University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southernmost Campus and the City of Brownsville.

A rather unique tree beside a building in the auditorium complex.

More blossoms on suckers either from the tree's root or a removed branch.

The first combat war plane. A plaque describing the experiences of two U.S. Army Signal Corps Lieutenants.[N.B.The U.S. Army Signal Corps Air Service began with balloons during the Civil; it ended in 1947 when the Army Air Corps became the U.S. Air Force, mainly thanks to Gen. Billy Mitchell.]

President Polk's plan in having "Old Rough & Ready," Gen. Zachary Taylor (later the 12th U.S. President), build a fort near the southern tip of what is now Texas was to provoke the Mexican government into a war, thus providing a reason for "liberating" California. His timing was almost perfect.
