Petroglyph National Monument, NM

Petroglyph National Monument, NM

High Desert RV Park*, Albuquerque, NM

I stopped briefly one day on my way to Salt Lake City from Albuquerque and took three photos in the Petroglyph National Monument Visitor Center. However, once I returned to Albuquerque I took the time to revisit this monument, which is adjacent to the north-western edge of the city. [Most of the photos taken on 2 May.]

What is a petrogylph and how is it created? If you took metal shop in junior high or high school, recall that you could used a center-punch to stamp your name into a piece of metal. The native Americans discovered that if they chipped the black top layer of the rock away, it was a lighter color underneath. They didn't have center-punches but could have used a sharp rock instead.

The two horizontal ears of corn at the bottom of this photo are the sweet yellow corn familiar to most of us today.

Boca Negra Canyon, where I took all except the first 3 photos above is north of the Visitor Center on the right side of Unser Blvd. There is a $1 fee for parking unless you have a senior pass.

"Archealogists refer to these images being made in the Rio Grande style, which developed rather suddenly around 1300 A.D. when the population increased with the construction of many pueblos."

These "glyphs" were just to the right of the above sign, which stated that elements of the Rio Grande style included human figures, animals, and geometric designs.

The top image is likely a grackle and not a parrot. However, grackles don't have curved beaks.

One of NASA's space vehicles re-entering the atmosphere?

Did Richard Milhaus ever run for office in New Mexico?

Doubt that this is a snowshoe unless the artist migrated south from Montana.

    A wrestling match?

    "What's up, Doc?"

    In technicolor?

Scroll down to see the rest of the "glyphs," some of which may contain modern graffiti.
