Leaving Taos on US64, I finally got a clear shot of Wheeler Peak (13,159'), the highest point in New Mexico.
Palo Flechado Pass (9101'), which means tree pierced with arrows, is the highest point on US64 between Taos and the Moreno Valley to the east. [Click once to enlarge; press ESC to return here.]
As one descends out of the trees the Moreno Valley become visible.
Once one descends into the Moreno Valley, the Angel Fire Lodge, which has a ski slope during the colder months, is to the right and Eagle Nest (town and lake) are to the left.

I thought I might be able, as a former Boy Scout, to park on the Philmont BSA Ranch; however, the signs said "No Parking for the Next 6 Miles." Here's a view of the Cimarron River (or Creek) as it empties onto the flatlands not too far from Cimarron -- after the verboten 6 miles.
