This was as close to the prospecting field of 37 acres as I could get without paying an $8 diamond-searching fee.

Zooming in it's clear the prospecting field has been plowed; in fact, the best time to search is after a rain &/or after it has been plowed.
On 8 Aug 1906 John W. Huddleston found two diamonds on his farm which eventually led to what is now the only operating diamond mine in the United States.
He sold the property to a group of Little Rock investors for $36,000, which is what he figured it was worth as farmland -- even though the dark soil of a former volcano would not grow cotton or grain.
He and his wife had six girls.
The map to the right indicates where various diamond mining operations existed. Even though the mine is currently only open to the public, there may be more commercial mining in the future.
While the campground was a bit "pricey," the income derived does allow more maintenance and upkeep than at most other state parks I've seen; like many public and private campgrounds I've visited, their showers need soap dishes & more hooks from which to hang your clothes.
