Meriwether Lewis' Dog: Seaman

    Seaman was a Newfoundland, which is large, has an oil-soaked coat, webbed-feet, and excels in rescuing those at risk in water. The first mention of Seaman in any of the diaries is not by Lewis or Clark but rather First Sgt Floyd, who wrote simply on an end-paper "Our Dog." In addition to being docile, he also had good judgment, for when one of the men wounded a deer which ran into the river, Seaman caught and drowned it before bringing it to shore.

    The American Kennel Club lists the height of a Newfoundland male at 28 inches. Lyndon Johnson had a Newfoundland which he named "Charlie Erhart," perhaps after a fellow Texan. But it's unlikely he ever lifted that dog by its ears as he did at least once with a beagle he owned since a full-grown Newfoundland male weighs 130 to 150 pounds.
