To quote Martin Luther King, Jr., "I'm free at last" -- from the Community Living Center of the Big Spring, Texas, VA Hospital. The food and care were good -- and I didn't have to wash the dishes. But the rules and regulations were onerous. And there is no WiFi unless one goes AWOL -- as I did to get their attention. [Ruth Hook, the CLC's Entertainment Director, was able to set up a WiFi Hot-Spot for me using her cell phone. Eventually, all VA facilities will have WiFi, but that day is likely 2-3 years in the future.]
The Big Spring Communal Living Center, formerly known as a VA Nursing Home, is located on the 5th floor of the hospital; see 1st link below for a photo of the hospital. For more on what the VA can do for a vet who is in his latter years, see this link.
While a poster to right of the Nursing Station at the CLC states that a veteran, if he's capable of understanding his condition and/or problems, may select the care he is to receive, I found that there is a gap between the statement of this policy and its implementation. Would I spurn another trip to a CLC because of this? No. I'd suggest you try it, and if it's not "your cup of tea," you can always sign yourself out.
