Grand Canyon National Park, AZ

Grand Canyon National Park, AZ Hillerman Branch Library, Albuquerque, NM

I had intended to stay at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, but, as with Cedar Breaks, I neglected to check the NPS website. North Rim, which has an average elevation of 8000', roughly 1000' higher than the South Rim, typically does not open til mid-May.

Because the North Rim was still closed on 13 April when I took these photos, I had to do an "End Around" to Desert View, which is roughly 215 miles from the North Rim.
I believe the butte in the above photo is Espejo Butte as seen from near Desert View.

Looking to the left (west) down the Colorado River from Desert View. Geologist have names for each of the layers you see. In most case they took millions of years to form.

This photo was taken in the Desert View area just to the left of the above photo but looking more to the northwest than the west. There is a sandbar just to the left of center in this photo, but there appear to be rapids along the base of the cliff across the river from the sand.

Again taken farther to the left but looking north. (Note the same almost man-made rock formation in the foreground of this and the photo above.)

Zooming in on the other side of the canyon, one sees very little vegetation on this south-facing canyon wall.

Geologist estimate that at the end of the last Ice Age 12,000 yrs ago the flow of the Colorado River was 10 times it current volume.

There was a 25-35 mph wind on 13 April with some gusts up to 50 mph. Result: dust.

A plaque explaining the construction of Mary Colter's Desert Vew Watchtower. The 70' tower was done with native stone and had a 40-ft kiva inside of its base. Hopi artist Chester Dennis incised petroglyphs on some of the interior walls. [A petroglyph is made by chipping away a darker surface to reveal lighter-colored rock beneath -- but in a particular pattern of significance to the artist.]

The completed Desert View Watchtower as it looks today.

The black Vishnu Basement rocks at the bottom of the canyon are believed to be 2 billion yrs old.

A shot down the Colorado from Navajo Point, the first viewpoint to the west of Desert View.
The Grand Canyon is somewhat unique in that most large canyons are in mountainous terrain rather than on a desert plateau.

Given the dryness of much of what is visible in this photo from Lipan Point, it's not surprising that the Grand Canyon has vegetation of 3 of the 4 American deserts: Sonoran, Great Basin, and Mojave. Only the Chihuahuan Desert, which is largely in Mexico and states bordering it, is missing.

From Zuni Point a relatively straight stretch with a view of the river.

Zooming in at Moran Point for a closeup of the river despite the dust.

Little tooo dark to see what's in the shadows at the bottom of the canyon. Hwr, that portion of the Colorado which is in the sun would likely give white-water rafters a bouncy ride.

Because of the large crowd at Grandview viewpoint (many vehicles parked off of pavement) I skipped it and stopped next at Yaki Point. The canyon which runs from near the dark-capped peak to the left appears to be Bright Angel Canyon. And the peak with the dark cap is one of those on the North Rim.

Probably another photo from Yaki Point, which is the 1st viewpoint to the east of the Visitor Center.

A photo from Mather Point, which is near the most populous area of the park -- the Grand Canyon Visitor Center and its many parking lots.

Panning downward and slightly to the left....

While the Colorado is not as brown as the Rio Grande here in New Mexico, it's surprising to see this much blue.

One final photo of the well-named Grand Canyon from Mather Point.

If you visit Grand Canyon NP consider using the free shuttle buses, which take you to viewpoints inaccessible by one's vehicle. For more info on the shuttles see the Park Guides published each season.

Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, AZ

Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, AZ

Hillerman Branch Library, Albuquerque, NM

At Kanab, UT, one can follow US89 through SE Utah and then into NE Arizona to cross the Colorado River on the Glen Canyon Dam near Page. Or, he can take US89A to Fredonia, AZ, and drive past the Vermilion Cliffs, rejoining US89 near Marble Canyon. I chose the latter.

As I dropped down off of the Kaibab Plateau on US89A the Vermilion Cliffs at the SW edge of the Paria Plateau became more visible.

Incidentally, the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument is one of five in AZ which is managed by the Bureau of Land Management rather than the National Park Service. [There are some National Monuments which are managed by the U.S. Forest Service.]

This photo was taken from the last switchback before one reaches the valley between the two plateaus.

I was mistaken in the caption immediately above, for I remember these rocks alongside US89A where a couple of fellows with a dog had stopped their old school bus.

    Panning left up the valley....

The photos above were taken on 12 Apr 2014; the balance of those in this post were taken the next day as I drove toward Marble Canyon.

"No, Kemo Sabe. Those aren't smoke signals. They're clouds. [...too much Red Eye last night.]"

Approaching Marble Canyon there were fewer Vermilion Cliffs.

Cedar Breaks National Monument, UT

Cedar Breaks National Monument, UT

San Pedro Library, Albuquerque, NM

As I drove south on US89 from Panguitch, UT, toward Kanab I decided to visit Cedar Breaks Natl Monument on UT14. I neglected to check the US Park Service website while parked near the Panguitch Library. (The librarian had given me their passcode just before she closed the previous evening.) The farther west I drove the more snow I saw.

The photo above as well as this one are of a reservoir on a tributary of Mammoth Creek visible from UT14. [All Cedar Breaks NM photos taken on 12 Apr 2014.]

This shot shows the dam. Had I checked the NPS website [see links below] I would have learned that the monument normally does not open until late May or early June.

If you look closely, you'll see a large RV in the lower left of the above photo. Either they too did not check the NPS website or they're snow-bunnies at the Monument for some frolicking in the white stuff.

Socorro County Catholic Missions, NM

Socorro County Catholic Missions, NM

San Pedro Library, Albuquerque, NM
Santa Fe, NM, was founded by Spaniards (likely priests -- see links below) in 1609, roughly 11 years before the Mayflower arrived in Massachusetts.
But there were already other Catholic Missions further south along the Rio Grande River such as this one in San Antonio, NM. [Despite the date of this post, this photo was taken on 10 May 2014.]

As one who, along with my four siblings, grew up in a mission town in California (Santa Cruz) I think of El Camino Real as a busy road from Santa Clara up the San Francisco Peninsula to Mission Delores in San Francisco. But there were other roads of the same name wherever the Catholics established churches.

Old San Miguel Mission in Socorro, which was founded in 1598 -- 199 years before the mission in my hometown. And it is still in active use judging by it large parking lots. However, the San Antonio Mission is now used part-time as a school and has a relatively small parking lot.

And since two of my sibling married Catholics and converted, I'm expected to include as many missions in this blog as possible.

A look a San Miguel Mission from from the north-east; workers were just cleaning up before heading for lunch.
Incidentally, my paternal grandfather was born in San Miguel, CA, where one of the 21 mission from San Diego to Sonoma is located.

Arches National Park, Utah

Arches National Park, Utah

San Pedro Library, Albuquerque, NM
26 Apr 2014: Some State High Points now contains the high points for TX & AZ

A view of the snow-capped La Sal Mountains not too far from the Park Avenue Viewpoint/Trailhead.

Looking up up the Park Ave trail. The vertical slabs to the right are know as fins.

Estrada sandstone which has been eroded away to leave nature's version of city skyscrapers. The fins are the first step in forming arches.

A look "down Park Ave." That is, a look at the Park Ave Trail, which is a one-way shortcut of about a mile.

A view down the road toward Courthouse Towers.

But first a photo of the Petrified Dunes.

The Organ -- not too far from the Courthouse Towers.

While this may not be the formation called Balanced Rock, it does show a capstone somewhat precariously perched atop a skinny pillar.

"Will the real Balanced Rock please stand up."

At last...some arches. Actually there were more to my back, but there were also a lot of people and their vehicles.

The fins look almost like castles in the distance.

Perhaps the most photographed arch in the park: the Delicate Arch from about a mile to the south.

The plaque explains that the Delicate Arch is 45 ft wide and 33 ft high. It's one of the photos on the page for Utah in my Rand-McNalley Road Atlas.
