Big Sacandaga Lake

Big Sacandaga Lake Gloversville Library, NY

[6 Sep 2015: Correction Made & Additional Link Added to Finger Lakes Post]

A large 1930 reservoir which expanded the size of the body of water to 49 miles by 5 miles. Its oulet: the Hudson River.
While the 1st link below speaks of considerable public access, what I found along NY30 was virtually all private property. The shot was taken near the Sunset Bay RV Park.

[Photos taken on 5 Sep 2015]

Zooming in and aiming a bit to the left to omit the RVs in the above photo, one can clearly see that this is a large lake. Notably, it was largely financed by those who would benefit from it rather than with tax revenue from the State of New York. And there may have been a house or an apple orchard here at one time.

Finding Campgrounds:

N.B. I receive nothing from Trailer Life, Woodalls, or FreeCampsites.net for including links to their free campground lookups.

  1. The lake possesses a state campground, another state day facility, 4 public boat launches, 2 town beaches and 1 village beach. There are also numerous marinas and several yacht clubs. Sunset Bay is a private RV resort and marina.

    1. While my sample was perhaps too small (just 1 side of the lake) to conclude that the remainder of the lake is similar, the Mayfield Town Beach was closed the day I drove by. And the locals weren't bashful about honking if you were driving too slowly for them. Best to check with a library (right?) or a Visitor Information kiosk.
