Langtry to Armistad National Recreational Area, Texas

    Eagle Nest Creek [bed] on US90 just east of the Langtry loop. Taken from the current US90 bridge the lower bridge is the old US90 highway bridge while higher bridge is the Union Pacific trestle.

 

 

 

 

    Looking down the creekbed from the other side of the current bridge, the white you see is sand and not whitewater.

 

 

 

 

    Zooming in farther down the canyon, one can see Langtry in the background.

    After Vinegarroon was abandoned in 1883 Roy Bean moved his saloon/courtroom to Langtry.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

    The three bridges Southern Pacific built over the Pecos River.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

    The most recent Pecos River Bridge, completed in 1957, after bridge #3 and two temporary bridges built in 1954 and 1955 were destroyed by Hurricanes Alice and Gladys, both Category 1 hurricanes.

 

 

 

 

 

    A plaque updating the bridges over the Pecos. In 1957 this was the highest bridge in Texas; however, with the completion of Amistad Reservoir, that may no longer be true.
