At Kanab, UT, one can follow US89 through SE Utah and then into NE Arizona to cross the Colorado River on the Glen Canyon Dam near Page. Or, he can take US89A to Fredonia, AZ, and drive past the Vermilion Cliffs, rejoining US89 near Marble Canyon. I chose the latter.
As I dropped down off of the Kaibab Plateau on US89A the Vermilion Cliffs at the SW edge of the Paria Plateau became more visible.
Incidentally, the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument is one of five in AZ which is managed by the Bureau of Land Management rather than the National Park Service. [There are some National Monuments which are managed by the U.S. Forest Service.]
This photo was taken from the last switchback before one reaches the valley between the two plateaus.
I was mistaken in the caption immediately above, for I remember these rocks alongside US89A where a couple of fellows with a dog had stopped their old school bus.
Panning left up the valley....
The photos above were taken on 12 Apr 2014; the balance of those in this post were taken the next day as I drove toward Marble Canyon.
"No, Kemo Sabe. Those aren't smoke signals. They're clouds. [...too much Red Eye last night.]"
Approaching Marble Canyon there were fewer Vermilion Cliffs.
