Better Photos from atop Sherman Pass

Better Photos from atop Sherman Pass Scotts Valley, CA, Library

On my only previous trip to the Vista Area atop Sherman Pass I was unable to get a good photo of Mt Whitney, which is 40 miles to the NNE, because of white clouds behind that peak; from a distance the granite near its top also looks white. [See 1st Link below.]
These new photos were taken on 6 October 2016, with blue skies and no clouds.

.     Here's a first shot of both Mt Whitney (14,505') and Mt Langley (14,026'), barely visible on the far horizon in a gap between the nearby trees.

Zooming in both Whitney & Langley look roughly the same height. And, since more detail is visible on the ridge to their right, I suspect that the ridge behind the dead branches at the top of the nearby tree is closer.

Turning my camera sideways and trying another zoom produced a better view of the two peaks -- though they again both appear to be approximately the same height.

Panning to the right yields a photo of Monache Mtn (c9420'); I must have cut off Olancha Pk, which at 12,123 ft. is considerably higher. [Perhaps I was distracted by the top of the snag on the left, which looks like an owl or a pelican whose feathers have been stained by black smoke.]

Trans-Sierra Passes

Trans-Sierra Passes Scotts Valley, CA, Library
A look at the eastern approach on CA120 to Tioga Pass (9945'), highest of the passes crossing the Sierra Nevada in Californa.
Most of the routes crossing the Sierra Nevada continue east to at least US395, if not farther. Luther, Walker, & Yuba Passes are omitted since they are shortcuts to other more heavily-traveled east-west passes.

Sonora Pass (9624') on CA108 is the pass I've used to cross the Sierra Nevada the most often. It's the second-highest trans-Sierra pass.

My favorite pass is not on a California State Route but is on US Forest Service Road #22S05 near the southern end of the Sierra Nevada. On a clear day one can see Mt Whitney to the NNE from the Vista Area atop Sherman Pass (9200'). Hwr, while paved, the road is not accessible by vehicles towing moderate to large trailers such as 5th-Wheelers. And most Class A RVs will be unable to navigate the hairpin turns from Kernville to Sherman Pass. [SeeTRGLinks below.]

Ebbetts Pass (8736')is not for the faint-of-heart since it has improved only slightly from when it was a trail for the Miwok and Washoe Indians. Oh, this 4th-highest (by my rankings) pass on CA4 is passable, but avoid it unless you are an experienced driver of mountain roads.

Red Lake near Carson Pass (8574') is not too far from Lake Tahoe on CA88.

A California State Historical Landmark on US50 for Echo Summit, near where the U.S. Track Team trained for the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.

Donner Pass, named after the ill-fated Donner Party of 1846-7, has a couple of different heights depending on which road you use, 7056' or 7240' (Euer Saddle). [See the link below to Wikipedia's list of California's Mountain Passes.]

The lowest of the trans-Sierra passes: Beckwourth Pass (5221').

In an article in Century magazine John Muir spoke of a valley on the South Fork of the Kings almost as grand as that on the Merced River in Yosemite. The photo was taken from the Canyon View(point) on the way to Roads End past Cedar Grove. Taken on 21 Oct 2012.

Sherman Pass, CA - Best View of the Sierra Passes

Grandview USFS Campground, CA

Snow prevented me from an east-west crossing of Sherman Pass in the spring of 2011 because of the heavy winter snow of 2010/11. One of the three fellows I met at the Sherman Pass Vista Point said that the pass normally did not open til May. It was certainly earlier than that this year.
The start of the climb from the North Fork of the Kern River not too far upstream from the Fairview USFS CG.

A truck camper either parked or boon-docked off of the Sherman Pass Rd while a one-ton pickup pulls a large horse-trailer up the grade.

Despite the apparent dryness there was actually water in some, but not all, of the small creeks.

Near Alder Creek the results of a forest fire perhaps 5-7 years ago.

Panning right, some interesting rock formations at the top of Alder Creek.

Bet this drainage looked considerably better before the fire.

The Sherman Pass Vista Point from just "down the road a piece."

My rig at the Vista Point next to what the USFS brass calls a "comfort station." Others might call it a rest room while red-necks call it an outhouse.

Olancha Peak in the distance directly over the Sequoia National Forest plaque on the Kern Plateau. [Click once to enlarge; press ESC to return here.]

Here's a close-up of the plaque in case you cannot read it in the above photo.

While the clouds make it difficult to make out the tops of Mt Whitney and Mt Langley, I believe the top of Whitney is slighlty to the left and Longley to the right of the second wooded ridge you see.
Now that I've been over all Sierra Passes from Beckwourth in the north on CA70 to the two highest, Tioga and Sonora, mid-state, and finally to Sherman at the southern end of the Sierra Nevada, it's ironic indeed that the best view is from the least-traveled!

I continued on toward the USFS CG at Troy Mdws. Here a shot between two red firs at Mt Whitney from the south rather than from the SSW.

Troy Meadows near the end of September, when what was once green is now brown. Interestingly, I saw a few lodgepole pines both in this meadow and at the campground. Lodgepoles have 2 needles in a cluster while ponderosas have 3; the needles for the former are short whereas those of yellow pines, another name for ponderosas, are long; finally, lodgepoles have a gray, scaley bark while the bark of ponderosa has large yellow & brown scales. Oh, the pinecones of the former are very small compared to those of the latter.
I could go on about the differences of the trees as to where they are located in the Sierras, but suggest you either buy a copy of Storer & Usinger's magnum opus, Sierra Nevada Natural History or check it out from your local library.
