Fort Stevens & Columbia River Photos

Pal Alto VA Hospital, CA

Though these photos were taken on 12 Aug, I've had many other photos to post and just now, thanks to the long Labor Day weekend, have time to post these.
Allan Pilger (SC HS, '57), a classmate, and his lady friend, Kathie Banquert, in the Astoria, Oregon, Library parking lot; they live near the mouth of the Columbia River.

Astoria and the Astoria Bridge across the Columbia River to Washington. Click 1 or 2 times to zoom in.

Panning left, more of the Astoria Bridge, which is rather long. In other words, as Lewis & Clark discovered, the Columbia has a very wide mouth as it reaches the Pacific Ocean.

Though it looks like the Pacific with whitecaps, this is still the Columbia River.

At the Eben H. Carruthers Memorial Park in Clatsop County I found this plaque giving an overview of the Lewis & Clark Expedition.

The Fort Stevens Stockade (or jail, as civilians would call it). If memory serves, this brick building was finished circa1913.

The remains of an old pier or wharf at the boundary of Ft Stevens and the town of Hammond.

Two small boats head either in or out the Columbia; but they're getting out of the way for an incoming vessel.

A long cargo ship, the "Mar Reina," if I am reading correctly.

In addition to my shadow, 2 strollers, 2 dogs, and a child, another view of Astoria from Hammond.

At long last, from the wooden viewing platform at the tip of Ft Stevens, the mouth of the Columbia -- with at least 5 boast in the distance.

Looking south from the viewing platform at the tip of Ft Stevens; not sure what the point is to the south, but, upon inspecting a map or Oregon, it appears to be Tillamook Head.
