Death At 82 Ends Long Civic Career of Judge Hodge
--
    Ernest Havilah Hodge, former judge and county supervisor, died this morning in a local hospital.
    He was 82 years old.
    Mr. Hodge was a supervisor from the Third district for 28 years and retired in January after serving as a judge of the Tuolumne district court for 13 years.
    He was also a leader in county civic and fraternal activities.
    Mr. Hodge was born in a mining camp near Lordsburg, N.M., while the town was under attack by one of Geronimo's Apache bands. The son of Matthew and Elizabeth Hodge, he was the first white child born in the small silver mining town. His father was a Cornish miner and traveler.
    The family moved frequently, with Ernest beginning his schooling in Calico, another silver mining town in California. After illness took the lives of a sister, Clara, 14, and a brother Fred, 18, the family moved to Grass Valley, Angels Camp, Murphys, Vallecito and finally to Blanket Creek in 1894.
    Young Ernest's formal education ended with graduation from the 8th grade. He continued his studies on his own, taking many correspondence courses and studying at night after putting in 10 [to] 12 hours work on the farm.
    In 1897 he met Maude May Baker, daughter of the Frank Bakers, who owned the townsite of Tuolumne. The young couple married on June 4, 1904, and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last June.
    Mr. Hodge worked as a farmer, miner, diaryman, carpenter, and teamster. He started work at West Side Lumber Co. as a carpenter shortly after his marriage and later became superintendent of construction. He also served as a safety inspector for the firm.
    Mr. Hodge was first elected to public office in 1922 as county supervisor and served as chairman for 16 years.
    As a member of the board in association with Frank Dondero of Columbia, he inaugurated the first paving of county road paving in 1925.
    He obtained the rights-of-way to build the Yosemite Road from the Pease ranch at the Algerine Road to Tuolumne, the Wood-Carne Road, and the King David Colony Road. He is also credited with replacing all wooden bridges and fords in the district with concrete structures.
    After his retirement from the board, he was appointed to complete the term of the late Judge Elmer E. McDow, who died in 1952. Mr. Hodge was elected to the post in 1959.
    In 1950 he was a Democratic candidate for [the] state senate.
    He was recently cited for his record of public service in a resolution adopted by the state assembly.
    In other civic affiliations he served as president of the Summerville High school board of trustees for 22 years, was master of the Eastern Belt Masonic lodge in 1927 and secretary for the past 35 years. He had been a member of the Tuolumne Hose Company for over 40 years, a past president of the Tuolumne City Progressive association, honorary member of the PTA, past grand of the Pine Tree Odd Fellows and secretary of the group for 12 years, and general chairman of the Tuolumne County Gold Rush Centennial in 1948.
    He also served as director of the Weimar sanitarium for 17 years and chairman of the Federal Lands committee, the state supervisors association and the federal lands committee of the National Association of County Officials. He was a trustee of the Methodist church and Morgan chapel and a charter member of the Tuolumne County Historical society.
    Besides his wife, Mr. Hodge is survived by 4 sons: Laurence, postmaster of Tuolumne; Lloyd of Chinese Station, a teacher at Sonora Elementary school; Elbert of Sacremento, manager of the Retail Credit Association; Fred of Portland, Ore., purchasing agent for General Electric in Portland; a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Barnett, a Modesto school teacher; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
    Another son, Ernest, died during World War II when the cruiser U.S.S. Houston was sunk at sea.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Heuton Memorial Chapel.

Final Rites
--
    Funeral Services for Roy Ingalls, 71-year-old member of a pioneer county family, will be conducted tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Tuolumne-Twain Harte chapel in Tuolumne.
    The services will be under the auspices of the Pine Tree Odd Fellows lodge, and interment will follow in Carters cemetery.
    Mr. Ingalls died yesterday in a local hospital. He had suffered a heart attack a week ago.
    The son of the late George Ingalls and Cordelia Duckwall, he was a native of La Grange and had been a resident of Tuolumne for 55 years. He was a rancher and logger.
    Mr. Ingalls was a member of the Pine Tree lodge for 49 years and a member of the Tuolumne Volunteer fire department.
    He is survived by his wife, Nell; a son, Edward of Sonora; a daughter, Cordelia Crowe of San Jose; a brother, Esky Ingalls of La Grange and two grandchildren, Denise and Craig Ingalls of Sonora.

    George P. Handy, 92, died yesterday at his home in Tuolumne.
    He was born in Georgetown and lived in Tuolumne for 67 years.
    A 50-year member of the Tuolumne fire department, Handy served as its president for 37 years. He owned and operated a garage for 25 years until his retirement. He had previously worked as a sawyer for the West Side Lumber Co.
    Handy was a charter member of the Pine Tree Odd Fellows lodge and belonged to the East Belt Masonic lodge for 50 years.
    He is survived by a son, Harold Handy of Tuolumne; two grandchildren, George Handy of Tuolumne and Jack Handy of Turlock; and two great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Heuton Memorial Chapel wirh Rev. Melvin Barnes officiating.
    Interment will be in Carters Cemetery in Tuolumne.
