Southside Branch Library, Santa Fe, New Mexico

Upton County was named for a CSA officer who was killed at the Battle of Manasas on 30 Aug 1862.
As this Texas State Historial Marker notes, oil has been a big part of the history of West Texas from 1925 to 1960.
Haven't seen any rattlesnakes yet in the SW; but given the high temperatures during the day, they tend to be most active at night when their prey, mainly rodents, are also most active.
Castle Gap, through which the Butterfield Overland Mail ran from 1858 to 1861; later, it was a key pass for cattlemen driving their stock north to market along the Goodnight-Loving Cattle Trail. [See the following plaque.]
