The town of Bruni was named for Antonio Bruni, a native of Emilia-Romagna, Italy. Not all first settlers were Spanish; nor did all Italians settle in fishing villages along the coasts of what became the U.S.
Since what's left of this building was right behind the above Texas Historical Marker, it's likely one of the earlier building in Bruni.
Hebbronville's Catholic Church: Our Lady of Guadalupe as seen from the city park.
A view of the church's twin bell towers.
Adjacent to the church is Scotus College, a Franciscan seminary.
Scotus College moved from Mexico to Texas in 1926 to escape persecution.
As the sun sets in the west....
One of two "ghost towns" along the drive from Hebbronville to Zapata.
At the suggestion of one of the Zapata librarians I drove c1.5 miles south from the bridge at the southern end of town to a sign indicating a Public Boat Ramp. It turned out to be a good place to park my camper overnight. Because of parking slots for trucks & their boat trailers, it might even provide parking overnight for medium-sized RVs and their toads.
Panning left, more of Falcon Lake, which extends for more than 30 miles up the Rio Grande. As you might expect, the largest trailer and boat belonged to the Border Patrol.
