Fort Ticonderoga National Historic Landmark, NY

Fort Ticonderoga National Historic Landmark, NY San Angelo, TX, Library

Built as star-shaped Fort Carillon by the French in 1755-58 at a narrow point in Lake Champlain just a short distance from the portage to Lake George to avoid the rapids in the La Chute River, the fort was controlled at various times by the French, the British, and the Americans.

The handout by the non-profit which runs the Fort states: "Two Wars, five Battles, & one Fort." The two wars were the Seven Years' War, which was known in the colonies as the French-Indian War, and the Revolutionary War. Gen George Washington felt the fort was not impregnable because smaller forces had repulsed larger attacking forces several times.

Here's a look up Lake Champlain over the above plaque. As you can see from the left side of that plaque Lake Champlain is 125 miles long and extends into Canada.

A plaque which reviews the battles which led to new occupants at Ft Carillon. The plaque omits the name of Benedict Arnold who was co-commander of Vermont's Green Mountain Boys with Ethan Allen. His later defection to the British during the Revolutionary War is likely the reason his name was stricken.

A first look at the outside wall of the fort.

    ...bristling with cannons....

"Get that boat out of here -- or else...."

Zooming out the the end of the cannon's barrel....

Inside the fort a view of what was perhaps the officers' quarters.

Because of the stairs I'm guessing the building to the right was where the troops hung out.

One last look at Lake Champlain down a cannon barrel.
