Pro Football Hall of Fame, Canton, Ohio

Pro Football Hall of Fame Del Rio, TX, Library

Though he was later a 49er, the caption here reads "Hugh McElhenny stiff arms his way for more yardage."

Bart Starr, legendary Green Bay Packers quarterback.

Quarterback Tom Brady smiles while his tight end is more demonstrative!

Dallas Cowboys Coach Tom Landry observes his team in action. Is he thinking about choking a referee? Not likely.

Oakland Raiders Coach John Madden, on the other hand, was not reticent when it came to telling the refs what he thought about their performances.

When a reporter asked a Green Bay player how Coach Vince Lombardi treated his players, one replied, "He treats us all the same." To which another added, "Yeah -- like dogs!"

While others may have been previously been paid to play, "Pudge" Heffelfinger received $500 cash to play one game on 12 November 1892.

Pro Football Spreads to Ohio. Ohio replace Pennsylvania as the hotbed of pro football. Although the pro game began in western Pennsylvania [think Jim Thorpe], by 1905 most pro teams in the region had disbanded and the game began to shift to Ohio. One of the earliest and strongest rivalries was between the Canton Bulldogs and neighboring Massillion Tigers. Other Ohio cities which fielded early pro teams included Akron, Cleveland, Columbus, and Toledo.

Joe Montana, who, with some guidance from 49ers coach Bill Walsh, helped his team win four Super Bowls during the 1980s.

Thanks to many touchdown passes from Joe Montana and Steve Young, Jerry Rice surpassed Jim Brown's record for touchdowns.

While Charles Haley left his marks on many opposing quarterback he also sometimes left his "mark" on the car of a teammate who displeased him.

Tim Brown, Oakland Raiders wide receiver, was featured on the ticket stub the day I visited the Hall of Fame.

The old maxim: "Defense Wins Games."

Finally, I've added a link below to the Wikipedia article on "Night Train" Lane, whose record for interceptions his rookie year in 19xx still stands.
