During the five years I've been traveling I've lost very few photos. However, by leaving the Mammoth Cave National Park photos on my memory card in my digital camera too long they vanished into the "Bit Bucket."
Of the 12-15 photos I took on the $5 self-discovery tour, only 3 or 4 had enough light to be usable. I did learn that I could take photos in near darkness, but had to make sure I held the camera steady.
The photos were lost because I cranked a dynamo flashlight just before returning my memory chip to my camera; had I touched metal with both hands first, the photos likely would not have been zapped.
And the prohibition against using flashes is necessary because not all of the tour was on a paved surface; some was on the dirt floor of the cave.

Here's the first paragraph from the National Park Service brochure on Mammoth Cave. "Beneath the sandstone and shale ridges of Mammoth Cave National Park lies the most extensive cave system on [Planet] Earth. After 4,000 years of intermittent exploration, the full extent of this water-formed labyrinth remains unknown. With over 365 miles of surveyed passageways, Mammoth Cave is over twice as long as any know cave. How long might it be? Geologists think there could be 600 miles of yet undiscovered passageways."
