Lincoln City to Siletz to Waldport

Alsea River RV Park

After staying at the Devils Lake Recreation Area RV within the city limits of Lincoln City I decided to head south, at least for a few days, before turning and heading for Astoria.
Here's a close-up of some berries growing at the back of my Devils Lake RV site. A young woman who was cutting back the plants along the path to the restrooms said they were Olala Berries, and that if you ate them, they would bother you for a while, but you'd eventually get a gut-ache.
After checking an on-line photo of Olala Berries, it's clear that they are a sub-species of blackberries; in fact, I vaguely recall my late father mentioning them. I had told the young woman that if there were bears around, they'd likely be eating them -- whatever they are; but Devils Lake is with the Lincoln City.

After stopping at the Lincoln City Library to upload the blog-post for 2 Aug I drove south, stopping just south of Schooner Creek where I took the photo to the right. The Siletz River empties into a slough and the bay off of the river mouth is called Siletz Bay. [Click 1 or 2 time to enlarge.]

A view of the Siletz river-mouth. Note that there are no surfers to be seen, meaning the waves are simply too small to attract the dudes who are found often along the California Coast.

Panning to the left, note that houses have been constructed by those who choose to ignore the risk of a tsunami. [Has anyone every heard of tsunami insurance?]

A couple of kayakers head up the Siletz River, which reminds me of the Navarro in California's Mendocino County. It's broad and fairly shallow -- but presumably during the winter and spring carries a much larger volume of water to the sea that is evident in this photo. [Click twice for bigger photo.]

A sign placed by the Lincoln County Historical Society on the Ojalla Bridge, named for Finnish immigrants Mattias and Aliina Ojalla.

The rather sturdily-constructed Ojalla Bridge over the Siletz River about 10 miles from the coast.

A look up the Siletz from the Ojalla Bridge.

Looking down the Siletz. [Note that the dominant tree in this area is the Douglas Fir, which thrives in the damp hills and mountains along the Oregon Coast.]

A view of the Alsea River from the Alsea River RV Park, where I finally found a parking spot for the night. The Alsea empties into the sea at Waldport. Both Waldport and Newport have large bridges over their harbors so that those driving US101 do not have to "shuck and drive" through many city streets as one does who drives through Yuba City and Marysville in California.

A view downstream from the Alsea River RV Park; the brim of my hat snuck into the photo, but that was unavoidable given the lowness of the sun.
